Main Beach Merimbula

Main Beach - Merimbula

New South Wales, South Coast

Popular and busy during holiday seasons, Merimbula's surfing fun at the lake entrance also brings big crowds and it's the local surfing community who truly dominate the line up when the surf is at it's best. Whilst a big swell is needed for Merimbula to be good for experienced surfers, its on the more common small wave days that the beach break peaks along the beach can also be really fun for kids and beginners - just remember to practise surfing etiquette.

Wave Type
Wide sandbars broken up by rips form along the length of the beach, creating lefts and rights during small swells with the biggest waves normally found towards the isolated, middle of the beach. Watch out for the deep holes and strong currents around the lake entrance and bar.

Merimbula is a good spot to head for shelter from north winds and to find smaller waves during big north east swells. The waves here however can prove too fast and steep for beginners during big south swells, when, along with south winds, its best to head to the southern ends of the beaches at Pambula or up to Tathra for easier and smoother surf conditions.

Good Wind Direction
Best on North East to West winds.

Good Swell Direction For Fun Beginner Waves
Big North swells, moderate East swells and small South swells.

Hazards
Rocks, Rip Currents and Marine life.

Have fun surfing Merimbula by practising surfing etiquette and surf safety.

Access
Car parks are located along the beach on the south side of the Lake entrance, and on the northern headland just before the aquarium.

Lifeguard Patrolled
Patrolled daily during peak holiday season from the 26th of December until the 26th of January - always swim between the red and yellow flags.

Beginners & kids are best to surf at beaches when Lifeguards are on patrol or with a friend who has decades of surfing experience.

Amenities
Located on Ocean Drive behind the northern end of the beach and at Ford Oval further down the beach, and also at the car park on the northern headland.

Closest Shops
There's a café opposite Ford Oval behind the beach and another on the northern headland that opens during summer. Head into Merimbula's town centre for a wide variety of cafes, restaurants, shops, clubs, pubs and Merimbula Surf Shop.

Merimbula Bar

The hazardous surf zone of Merimbula Bar should be avoided by beginners on all but the tiniest of surf days due to the strong currents and powerful waves that exist around the inlet entrance.
