Long Beach – Robe

Long Beach - Robe

South Australia, Limestone Coast

The first good surf spot for beginner surfers east of the Adelaide / Fleurieu Peninsula region, Robe is a busy coastal town in summer when Adelaide and country South Oz residents migrate here to escape the heat by swimming, surfing and fishing in the turquoise blue waters of this laid back Limestone Coast town. Here you'll find excellent shelter from big south and moderate west swells. There is a string of small beaches in town that are great for swimming with bigger and more consistent waves for surfing to be found heading north along the length of Long Beach where driving on the sand is also permitted.

Wave Type
Close out waves break along the wide, straight sandbar at the southern end of the beach. This makes surf conditions safe and easy for practising catching whitewater waves or green waves when the surf is small - stick to higher tides when attempting to catch green waves to minimize the risk of nose dives.

Bigger waves with better shape for turning across the wave face can be found to the north up the beach, so find a spot free from rip currents that is free from crowds and enjoy. During north winds, Beachport down the coast will have smoother surfing conditions.

Good Wind Direction
Best on South to East winds.

Good Swell Direction For Fun Beginner Waves
Small West swells to moderate South West to Big South swells.

Hazards
- Rocks
- Rip Currents
- Marine Life

Have fun surfing Robe by practising surfing etiquette and surf safety.

Access
Walk from town or park at the southern end of the beach. Driving on the sand is also permitted from 1km north of the southern end of the beach.

Lifeguard Patrolled
The beaches around the town of Robe are not patrolled. The small beaches in town and the southern corner of Long beach are safer than the more exposed middle section of Long Beach - watch out for rocks and rips and it is best to always swim between the red and yellow flags.

Beginners & kids are best to surf at beaches when Lifeguards are on patrol or with a friend who has decades of surfing experience.

Amenities
Located behind the south end of Long Beach and in the town of Robe.

Closest Shops
Good food and coffee is offered at several cafes, restaurants and take away shops. Steve's Place Surf Shop is also in Robe if you need any surf gear.

Flat sandbars in the southern corner are best surfed on higher tides for catching green waves as the close out waves dump in very shallow water at low tide.
