Duke Head - Augusta
Australia's South West
This sheltered western corner of Duke Head Beach, located to the west of the inlet entrance at Augusta, can at times have good waves for beginners when the waves are small. Slightly smoother surf conditions can be found here when the Fremantle Doctor (the persistent summer wind) is blowing from a more westerly direction, along with shelter from west swells. Conversely this spot can be dangerous during common big south to south west swells, and during strong south winds the surf conditions here get messy.
The south western end of the beach normally has a safe sandbar that is attached to the beach, along with the smallest waves that are fun for catching short whitewater waves. Catching green waves is easiest during small wave and high tide conditions, as the waves often close out. Watch out for rocks in the southern corner and avoid the strong rip currents and bigger waves that exist around the inlet entrance.
If the surf is flat here, Redgate Beach on the exposed west coast will often have a wave, but stick to the whitewater on a safe sandbar as the waves break with a lot of power. When the surf is too big at Duke Head, options with smaller waves may include Hamelin Bay or Bunker Bay way up north around Cape Naturaliste, located inside the very sheltered Geographe Bay - this area also offers protection from summer south west winds and is a great spot for a swim.

The car park is located beside the inlet at the south end of the beach.
The beaches around Augusta are not patrolled. The closest patrolled beach is at Margaret River where lifesavers are on duty each Sunday during summer - always swim between the red and yellow flags.
Beginners & kids are best to surf at beaches when Lifeguards are on patrol or with a friend who has decades of surfing experience.
Located next to the car park on the south side of the inlet.
The Colourpatch Café is located right behind the beach next to the car park, otherwise head into Augusta town centre for more shops and services.
