Western Australia, Perth
Scarborough Beach (along with Trigg) are the most popular surf spots in Perth. Their reputation for more consistent surf brings the crowds, however, good sandbars for practising surfing can also be found along the often less crowded line ups at the beaches between here and Cottlesloe beach. Search around and find a sandbar away from the crowds, you'll catch more waves and have more fun.
From Trigg Beach in the north to Cottlesloe Beach in the south, sandbars are broken up by rips and long shore gutters close to the beach. Waves generally break fairly close to shore and offer short and fast rights and lefts. The waves in summer can dump and close out, making catching green waves very tricky for beginners, so stick to catching whitewater waves if you are new to surfing. Find a sandbar attached to the beach and stick to it, avoiding rips and long shore gutters.
Beginner surfers should make the most of the common tiny surf days that occur around Perth as there are often fewer crowds in the water and catching green waves is easier as the waves break more slowly and softly on the small surf days. Surf early in summer before the south west winds pick up, making surfing conditions messy and challenging.
